The issue, more simply stated, would read:

Does someone willing to torture an innocent cat for pleasure deserve to lose a hand? Most of us seem to answer in the affirmative.

A more interesting question would be: Would you be willing and able to break someone's arm if it was the only way to prevent an innocent cat from being barbecued? And I think most of us would say no.
