One rule of thumb you should give some thought to:

With top pair type hands look for two streets of value (instead of three). Someone who comes along all the way is likely beating top pair. By slowing down either on the turn or on the river (sometimes even on the flop) you lose less if you are beaten and win the same if you are ahead. Sometimes you even win more by inducing a bluff by checking.
