fwiw bob, and this may have been mentioned, i usually stay away from the tables with 4 or more on the waiting list. if i do put my name on, i may scout it throughout my session to make sure the donators are still present. if they leave(as they often do by the time it reaches you as the 4th in line), i just remove myself from the list or decline the seat when it opens.
