Judging someone's socioeconomic status by the car they drive can be a poor metric. Very common for people who worked their way through life and earned a lot of money through hard work to drive beaters like this. Others just don't want the attention.

Sounds like you're in the wrong more than he is. All he did was back up to get that spot. Your mom sounds like a real winner with a lot of class judging by her reaction.
