Because the Manning detractors have been, on balance, totally ridiculous up until now. Plenty of people here said that Manning was just a loser who would always choke in the playoffs -- I don't know if you ever said he'd never win a Super Bowl, but I'm pretty sure you were in the 'Manning is a choker' camp.

As for why you'd take so much flak for that stance, look at it this way: you're on a message board where statistics are central, yet you had taken a very small sample size and used it to form the opinion that a dominant player had some totally unquantifiable problem (lack of clutchness). A comparable claim about a poker player in one of the strategy forums would be ridiculed into oblivion.
