Overprotective Americans are funny as hell.
Only once have I not been able to see a movie in the theater because my brother was 15 (Kill Bill). I was surprised. That was relatively recently, and in a large theater - video rentals were never a problem, it wasn't even frowned upon.
For instance, when I threw my 11th birthday party, we watched Commando. We replayed the scene where he throws the circular blade after he comes out of the shed, because it was over so quick and we wanted to figure out WTF happened. We also played Mortal Kombat, Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. As far as I can tell, being able to do that was fairly standard in my whole class.
Don't worry about it. Your kids likely aren't retarded. None of us grew up to be serial killers.
