Sorry that this question is a little bit vague, but what does it really mean to "play better than your opponents postflop"? Is there some sort of compact answer as to what that entails?

For the most part, it just means hand reading. Like Sklansky's Fundamental Theorem of Poker says, how would you play the hand if you knew what they held? In practice, it means getting max value when you have the best hand, not getting bluffed, bluffing often enough that you win a bit more than you deserve, as well as metagame things like not tilting which will cause you to lose the preflop battle.
