To answer the original question:

While I liked the series of episodes I've seen (midway through season 4), all of the hardcore psycho fans of the show always say "ZOMG, you have to catch up and watch all 5 seasons to appreciate it!"

It makes me want to not watch it, and my instinct is to despise everyone who is obsessed with the show. So, in summary, 24 is an awesome show, but the people who are obsessed with it are incredibly annoying.
