I worked/lived in Kosovo for awhile - it's not really dangerous anymore but it's pretty boring and there seems to be trash everywhere.

One positive - the black market economy. You can form a complete wardrobe full of stolen/fake designer clothing for under $200.

Places to avoid due to war at this time - Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan

other potentially dangerous areas: Turkmenistan (political turmoil expected due to death of dictator), Sri Lanka, Palestinian Territories, Chechnya, Kashmir region of India/Pakistan
