smash brothers 64: best character?

Recently my friends and I have gotten re-obsessed with smash brothers on the nintendo 64. Let me first say that none of us are experts by any means but a few of us are pretty decent. I choose to play kirby but have lately been dominating and my friends have become convinced that Kirby gives me an unfair advantage in the game.

I'm curious, is there any way I can convince them that Kirby is not the best character? I don't feel like he necessarily is. Who is the best character?
