Do not buy drugs from any Thai person would be the most general advice. Until you live there for a while and develop relationships you will not know who to trust. People will do things like set you up with the pigs. Bar girls are often pretty familiar with the cops and, IMO, therefore less likely to actually sell you drugs and more likely to work you over with the pigs.

When I lived there I only bought weed once from a Thai kid on Ko Lanta. Was pretty iffy about it at first but went to some beach bars where people (Thai and farang) were smoking very openly so I felt better about it. For my regular hook-up when I lived in Chiang Mai, I went through a farang friend.

If you are just there for a bit and want to hook it up I would suggest finding some other farang that seem like they know what is up and subtly asking them. Don't buy from anyone who approaches you about drugs and (obviously) don't go for the most conspicuous druggie in the place. Just like anywhere, find someone who seems trustworthy, use your head and trust your instincts.

Thailand is a very laid back place and can be ideal for partaking in certain drugs and yes, you can score some. But the police and justice system do not treat the problem of drugs lightly so you have to be very very careful.
