The promotion/relegation leads to teams merely just trying to survive. So they look at their schedule and circle likely wins, or at least circle games they know they have to win. They also look at their schedule and know before the season the games they are likely to lose.

In the major sports in the US, there is no promotion/relegation, so teams don't have to survive. So their only goal is to win as many games as possible and make the playoffs.
