Not saying I agree with his flop play, because I would definitely bet it. But wouldnt it be better to check a dry flop than a wet flop?

No... you don't define your hand, the pot is already large so it would be terrible to get caught in a situation like this and fold the best hand. The main problem here is that the pot is large and you should bet. Villian is more likely to make a mistake, and we build a pot with what is likely the best hand.

Checking in a large pot with the best, but vulnerable hand (you only have one pair afterall), is not the correct play.

In this case, it ends up as the perfect play because we get his whole stack, but it isn't correct based on the information posted.
