This has nothing to do with football. The name of the University is The Ohio State University as opposed to Ohio University. I want to Ohio and at that time they were fighting over the use of the name "Ohio." I first saw it in print as "The Ohio State University" about 10 years before hearing it on TV.

The use of "The.." predates the legal issues with Ohio U. That's just the excuse people give nowdays, but it doesn't hold up historically. The spat didn't begin until 1995 and it was used before then.

It's more then likely been used to try and give the school elite status in the state of Ohio. So, yeah the prententious "we're better then you " theroy is probably correct.
