i think avoiding the embarassing stuff is fine, i only think it's annoying if the person that it bothers calls excessive attention to themself every time it occurs. sort of like the "WOULDN'T KNOW...I DON'T OWN A BOOB TUBE" advertisers (yes i've seen the onion link).
