OP,

If you are at all financially dependent on your parents, this letter is a big mistake. If you are living on their money, it is well within their rights to decide how you spend that money--even if you can prove that you're a winning player, that you're not obsessed, etc.

If you're playing with your own money and going away to college, then you shouldn't worry about whether your parents approve or not--and there's no need to tell them about it. You're 18 years old and legally responsible for yourself.

But I don't see any benefit to this kind of confrontation.
