huh? not to defend the cubs' offseason moves, but ronny cedeno is outperforming furcal (barely) for $13mil less, and preston wilson has a negative VORP, producing easily less than jones. which of last winter's free agent starting pitchers are looking like good investments? burnett? weaver? loaiza? byrd? millwood? morris?

there's a right way and a wrong way to GM:

right way: sign past-peak shortstop who can't hit to start and bat leadoff, watch him develop into perennial all-star, and laugh from your perch at the top.

wrong way: sign past-peak shortstop who can't hit as your backup middle infielder, and when pressed into duty, he continues to hit poorly as he has his whole career.
