Just depends on the movie. For a big studio picture, 34M is a complete dud, since it could easily cost over 100M to make plus marketing costs. For an art-house film or low budget horror/comedy/whatever 34M could be a huge return. Malibu's Most Wanted had a production budget of $15M, so $34M in theaters was probably pretty good.
