Default Re: Why do people spend so much time and money on cars?

I guess it is all relative. There is more to be said about nice cars than "they look nice and drive fast." Many of them are safer, have a smoother drive, and are built better.

Mid range cars are probably the best deal out there as they can provide a middle ground of all the features you want - why accords and camrys sell so well. However, if you can afford it I see nothing wrong with spending an extra $10k to get a bmw or the like. It is all relative to the level of enjoyment it will bring you w/o sacrificing necessities or your future.

Anything in excess can be bad but subtle or limited extravagance to gain a little luxury and style is ok in my book. I'll be making a solid salary as a lawyer next year and I could probably try to blow my wad and get an M3 or something like that, but instead I'll likely go for a lower 3 series or maybe a certified pre-owned. I'll still being putting in the full amount for my 401k, building my portfolio, paying off my loans, live in a nice place and save up for a piece of land.

For me it is totally worthwhile and I look forward to the lifestyle. I do understand what you are saying though. It is all about living w/in your means and being prepared for the future. But you cannot sacrifice your present and only live for the future. Enjoy it all.

Balance baby, balance.
