I read the entire article with interest. By the way, I used to have the older Fowler's (second edition) but someone pinched it at work. I now own the revised third edition (by R.W. Burchfield). From which I quote:
"At the present time, especially in written English, there is abundant evidence for the use of an before habitual, historian, historic(al), and horrendous, but the choice of form remains open." The same book makes reference to an hotel, as "now old-fashioned". Thus, I assume you love this quaint expression like a brother. I would like to add a word of chastisement. The party is almost over and the majority are past out or too drunk to appreciate much and you finally show up late with a $240 bottle of Champagne and expect everyone to rejoice. Not only is your timing poor, you English Professors ain't never learnt much have yawl. -Zeno, Wordsmith |
