A push will also make a lot of hands fold that might have called a regular flop 3-bet.

Yeah, the power of pushing is fold equity, and we don't want fold equity here. You want hands that are drawing nearly dead to call. I'd 3bet enough to not give odds to the draws, but not too much so that he might call with Ax (if he's bad enough for that, a solid player would fold that of course.)
