I don't understand why everyone is saying that by the Rangers going out and signing one of the best defenseman (29 years old) in the NHL to a 5 year contract automatically means the Rangers are playing with fire and attempting a Stanley Cup run next year or the year after.

Signing one player to a max contract won't kill the Rangers cap. They have Jagr on the CHEAP. He is getting 4 million a year (the Caps are picking up the rest). The Rangers could return their entire team from this year (expect Ozolinsh and probably Poti ~ those 2 are as good as gone) and sign Chara and still have millions to spare. Signing Chara won't prevent the Rangers from acquiring/retaining other good players.
