bay101 roll call - Page 5

SO I play every Friday night at Bay 101. TYpically play 8-16 and I am averaging about 2BB/hr. I would characterize my play as being tight, and very agressive. Whenever I go over to the 20-40 table at Bay 101, I find it to be a humbling experience. Most of the time, I found a whole table full of loose, and agressive. I have made any money playing those tables at all. Comments Please?

I play there most every day. I think I played with you, too, but I forgot what you look like because I was drunk the one time we met in SF.

I found moving from 8/16 to 20/40 was the hardest jump in skill level I had in my poker career (I currently play 20/40). You have to learn a lot more tricks. I think a lot of edge also comes from knowing how your opponent's play because there is a smaller pool of 20/40 players.

Here are some basic tips:
1. Get proficient in shorthanded/blind steal spots. These spots happen alot more. Start with reviewing your opening ranges in the late positions as well as your defending hands.

2. Pick your spots. This starts with game selecting well. Everytime I've been there, there's almost always at least 2 if not 3 or 4 20 tables going. Walk around or sit near the tables and just look at pot size/preflop action. You should be looking for coldcalls, multiway pots, etc. By the time you're seated, you should know which of the tables you want to be at. Call for a table change immediately.

2a. Get a seat where you can isolate the fish and a seat far away from the TAGs/solid players. Fold marginal holdings against good players, isolate players who spew/calldown post flop. Stay out of my way.

3. Make sure you're rolled for the game. The game doesn't just play 2.5x bigger than 8/16, it's not the loose-passive fishdom that small stakes is. Aggression happens more frequently, even when not well-reasoned. This increases the variance which means you need to be comfortable, both financially and emotionally to deal with a bigger loss on any given day.
