Scotty Nguyen Doubles Through Ryan Elson

Ryan Elson fired out a raise of 375,000. Scotty Nguyen took a deep breath and moved all in for 1,875,000. Elson went into the tank as he asked Nguyen to count out his chips. The rowdy spectators on the rail began to shout and scream. Most of them were rooting for Nguyen.

"Come on, Scotty!" one railbird yelled.

"Go get them Scotty!" another screamed.

"I'm the comeback kid," Nguyen said.

Nguyen stood up as Elson pondered the call.

"All In drink made me do it," Nguyen joked as he took a big sip off of the energy drink for the ESPN cameras.

Elson counted his chips a couple of times before he called and said, "Let's party."

Elson flipped over {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}. Nguyen tabled {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}. The flop was {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{8-Spades} and Nguyen took the lead. Nguyen pumped his fist and his smile grew wider. Elson just sighed as he politely asked the dealer for a ten. The turn was the {5-Hearts} and the river was the {6-Hearts}.

Scotty Nguyen took down the pot and increased his stack to almost 3.8 million. Elson took a big hit and slipped to under 3 million.

Kenny Tran Wins a 2.21 Million Pot Against Tuan Lam

At the Featured Table, Tuan Lam raises under the gun to 250,000, and Kenny Tran calls from the big blind. The flop comes {K-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}, and both players check. The turn card is the {J-Spades}, Tran bets 300,000, and Lam calls.

The river card is the {6-Spades}, Tran checks, Lam bets 500,000, and Tran calls. Lam shows {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for queen high, and Tran shows {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for a pair of jacks. Kenny Tran wins the pot worth 2.21 million in chips.

[/ QUOTE ]

Wow Lam misplayed that hand completely.

Another item on Jeffrey Pollack's list, the orange/salmon/peach/pink chips are horrible!

We saw this effect last year, people with VERY deep stacks relative to the blinds (30 BB +) getting all in preflop with marginal type hands (AJo, 66, etc.)

My attempts at explaining this:

1. Alot of these players have most of their tournament experience on the internet and thus are very used to shoving all in preflop towards the later stages, where the blinds are typically high compared to the stakes. Thus this is really the only way they know "how" to play this stage.

2. They may be not paying enough attention to the blind size but rather the stack sizes of the bigger stacks. If you have 1 mil in chips and there are stacks of 7 mil around you, you may feel shortstacked, regardless of what the blinds are, thus they feel the need for their shortstack game.

3. Alot of them are just idiots?

[/ QUOTE ]

Maybe stack sizes under 50bb isn't as deep as you think.

If 3 is correct, tourneys are mostly just luck.
