re: pastel ties

try the pastel and bright colors as an accent. a little goes a long way.

and am I the only one who hates striped ties. I don't think I have ever owned a striped tie.

Here's a fashion you probably don't want to emulate:

So, I found another pair and am debating between the ones I bought and a pair I have here.
So...I will have to post both to get opinions.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ok-I will get opinions but I have an idea which way this will go.
I debated posting this because for some odd reason I am embarrassed...
Black long linen dress-kind of vintage 50's

Shoe #1

Shoe #2

I like both of these a lot. The shoes look a little more formal (though stylish) and the sandals look more fun. I think I prefer the polka dot sandals myself. It's a wedding, right? Are polka dot sandals too informal for a wedding? They do have a heel so I'm sure they are plenty dressy. Yeah, I think I prefer the sandals. They are really cute.

Blarg,

You like these bangs better?

[/ QUOTE ]

I dunno, they still look like they'd poke her in the eye. I guess I'm a fan of eyeballs not being poked. I don't see any reason for bangs to not end at the eyebrow. Frankly, she's got her ear sticking out, but only on one side, and her hair is frizzy and going every which way - she looks sloppy, like she should run a brush through it or something.

[/ QUOTE ]

The more I think about it, the more comfy I feel saying those aren't really bangs. They're just a mess. Any ole hippy can do it. It's the limits on what's going on that make them bangs. Just letting your hair fall down in front does not make bangs. Longer, shorter, still doesn't matter -- letting it flap out front doesn't make it bangs.

So no to this?

But yes to this?

[/ QUOTE ]

No to both, actually, but the pastel tie clearly clashes with the shirt and is much much worse.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm not really crazy about either of those ties myself. Curious what you guys think would be a great tie choice for shirt #2. Examples? I have little talent for matching ties with shirts.

Kinda a hard question to ask or answer, since most of those pics don't even qualify as bangs or else aren't even trying to be bangs. Natalie Portman's bangs are fine, as are Reese's. Natalie Imbruglio(is that her name?)'s bangs are just loose hair, not really bangs.

Demi's bangs are too long -- sloppy. What is with this new(I guess?) trend for bangs that aren't even really bangs? They look okay, but really she looks a bit like she's wearing a helmet or something, maybe a wetsuit with just her big ole face hanging out.

Jessica's look better, and Penelope's are kind of a really weird mix like sparse bangs and a chunk hanging down ridiculously between the rest of the bangs. The blonde's of course are just there to look stupid, and I'll give her full credit for that. This is the fat-chick kind of thing where they try to get in their mind they look interesting by doing something goofy in a vain(in both senses of the word) attempt to make you overlook the gut and the double chin.

Demi's and Jessica's are very close, but the stark contrast of dark hair with light skin makes the clumsy, helmet look of Demi's cut come out the worse of the two.

If you have little talent for matching ties with shirts, I think a good rule is to not be ambitious. There are some fashion matches that only come together after you think about them for a while. But they're not initially pleasing to the eye. Get a designer, and he may tell you that they're correct or even inspired. But few people will see things with that kind of eye, and more important, few people will really appreciate a match that seems clusmy or clashing until further scholarly review.

In general, if you want to look good, I'd suggest it not be a post-doctoral project, but something that actually sways someone besides yourself and maybe some pantheon of swishy fashion gods.

So, keep it simple. If you have a patterned shirt, see if you can set it off with simplicity instead of similarly or even more complex patterns. If you have a plain shirt, go for something that seems interesting because you can see at a glance how it melds so well into the whole even if it is a bit of a surprising choice, rather than something that only seems okay after hashing it out a lot before a panel of neutral arbitrators. You don't win appeal with intellect.
