Katy, don't underestimate the effect of religious issues on voting. It's a gigantic trend in the past few decades.

Has it been trending up that long? I saw it as a more cyclical thing that has recently trended upward again. Gotta love politics.

[/ QUOTE ]

The single-issue religious voter is a major portion of the republican power base.

The christian right/social conservatives determine who becomes president within their party. this is why Fred Thompson will win the nomination over Mitt Romney unless he screw up.

Who watched the debate last night, anyone? I'd love to hear your analysis. Who do you think did well and who do you think did poorly?

Unfortunately I only caught a small portion of it. I was impressed with how Obama handled his questions and how "presidential" he looked. I also liked Biden. I was not all that impressed with what little I saw of Clinton but I am probably prejudiced. I just don't think she can win this election.

What do you guys think of an Obama/Biden ticket? Would it work?

No.

Obama's chances haven't improved since the thread started.

Biden has two problems. He has already committed one gaffe where Obama is concerned with his statement about how Obama was 'clean' or whatever it was. That's how I remember him saying it; perception is reality in politics.

Biden also has the stench of 'loser' on him. He got run out of the '88 campaign for plagirism. Now he's become sort of the joke of every campaign season; he throws his hat in the ring only to get nuked in Iowa and New Hampshire, then he slinks back into the Senate chamber for four more years.

Dems chances haven't improved. GOP will walk away with this election.

I really love seeing the comment about Gore saving the day. He is a political retard who has only gained relevancy be using unscientific claims to spark a fear of global warming. Pretty much my worst nightmare is a Hillary and Gore combo, although thankfully it could never happen.

I am a fairly conservative Repub, but also lean libertarian on many issues and have no idea where the party should go. McCain would be any Dem candidate, but won't make it out of the primaries and no one else is all that appealing to me. I think Fred Thompson would actually be the best candidate. He would get the parties approval, but he also showed sign of bipartisanship that is going ot be necessary. I don't agree with many of the Dems ideas, but I do think a middle of the road candidate may be best for our country whether I like it or not.

Hilary is a contender, I believe.

What do you think?

[/ QUOTE ]

Not only a contender, but the current favorite IMO.

Some people dislike her because of the idea that she is an opportunist who only moved to NY State because it was the easiest path to a Senate seat and eventually the White House. Others just find her mannerisms cold.

But I think the main reason people dislike her is because she is blatantly ambitious, and makes no apologies for it. This is an admirable trait in a man but still seen as unseemly in a woman. It's a double standard and it sucks IMO.

She has proven herself hard-working and competent as a senator and I have a feeling she will win over a lot of fence-sitters as the campaign goes on. She is most likely getting my vote although as a New Yorker I'm a big fan of Bloomberg also (if he runs).
