In the spirit of this hand, I present another hand for your amusement.
Full Tilt Poker - No Limit Hold'em Cash Game - $0.40/$0.80 Blinds - 3 Players - (LegoPoker HH Converter) SB: $219.95 BB: $211.40 Pokey (BTN): $168.70 Preflop: Pokey is dealt Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (3 Players) Pokey raises to $2.80, SB raises to $9.20, BB folds, Pokey calls $6.40 Three-way action and SB has been getting WAY out of line. I reraise big...and he comes back at me. Big. Ugh. With $150 in the pot already I feel that any folding equity a push could muster would be solid gold, and I also feel that my six outs are likely clean, meaning that I'm about 3-to-1 to win if I hit while the pot is offering me 1.4-to-1. He has to fold quite a bit for this to be a good play, and he won't. So why bother pushing? SB shows A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 8[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] Pokey shows Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] Because sometimes he calls with a worse hand. For those of you interested in learning about an advanced topic, read Nate tha' Great's post about value bluffing. Turn: ($338.20) Q[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (2 Players - 1 All-In) Insult.... River: ($338.20) 3[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 Players - 1 All-In) ...to injury. Pot Size: $338.20 ($1 Rake) SB had A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 8[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (three of a kind, Threes) and LOST (-$168.70) Pokey had Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (a full house, Threes full of Queens) and WON (+$168.50) IMPORTANT NOTE: before you go trying to pull this move all the time, realize that (a) villain was quite a maniac and (b) the table was three-handed, where hand values change fairly dramatically. |

My best online buddy who is my partner in running our own forums together played almost 18k hands this weekend and I played about 3k because I was in a wedding for one of my best friends.
Just about all of his were at $50NL and here's one major one that almost broke my record for biggest $50 NL pot. Sorry for not being able to convert it, but this is all I got: http://www.pokerhand.org/?1159607 What is this other guy betting so much with on the river and folding to a $40 raise with so much invested? |

[/ QUOTE ] I made the same play yesterday against Ace high with my pair of 7's on 889 flop . But he ofcourse rivered an ace. I still thought it was a nice play, I rarely do it tho. BTW pokey, u seem like a pretty good player, U also hang around here for quite a while, so why do you still play the micro's? And not 2/4 or something. |

Pokey, I don't have your read on the opponent obviously, but I can't see that this bet is +EV as a value bet even against this opponent. this is just a random calling range I chose based on that he called you with A8:
Board: 3d 9c 3h equity Hand 0: 47.525% { AQs, AQo } Hand 1: 52.475% { 55+, A8s+, KJs+, A8o+, KJo+ } according to Nate a value bluff has to succeed as a value bet against some opponents - I can't see you getting called with a much looser range than this. |

[/ QUOTE ] I was playing 1/2 before I went on hiatus for about four months; now, I'm easing myself back into the game to try and remember how to play while the stakes are still small. The past couple days I've been playing 0.4/0.8 deepstacked and 0.5/1, so those both qualify as SSNL; I just like this forum better, so I hang around. Hope you guys don't mind. bozzer said: [ QUOTE ] according to Nate a value bluff has to succeed as a value bet against some opponents - I can't see you getting called with a much looser range than this. [/ QUOTE ] Actually, Nate said that a value bluff can succeed if it works as either a value bet or a bluff, under the right circumstances. However, I also think that the paired board and my own hyperaggression make the "bluffcatcher" hands significantly weaker than what you might be used to. In extremely short-handed scenarios where all players have adjusted to the extreme short-handedness, I've seen people call down (correctly) with jack-high. Mind you, I haven't seen it much with stacks 200 BBs deep, but a push here is usually "monster or air." Villain obviously assumed that I had a monster less than 4/5ths of the time and figured that A-high beats my air. I'd say that if villain decided he was going to catch me bluffing a possible calling range might be "any pocket pair, any 3, any nine, any queen, any king, any ace." If he felt that I had the goods, his calling range would be reduced to "99, any 3." Value bluff. Or spew. Whichever. Heck, I can't decide if this play was smart or retarded; I'm just glad it worked. |
