Using one database on two computers

Hello,

I have a desktop computer and am probably going to get a laptop. I was wondering if there's any way I can use the same pokertracker database with both computers. I was thinking something like using an external hard drive or something and switching it between the different computers, but I have no idea how they work and if my idea would work. Any help with this or other solutions would be appreciated.

I'm in the same situation, and so far this doesn't seem as easy as I expected.

If you use a postsqrl database (as seems to be the preferred method), Pat from Pokertracker told me it's kind of complicated (involving uninstalling psqrl and reinstalling, to have it direct to the portable drive). I actually just posted a question to him about making it work with just an access database.

I'd love to hear from someone who has actually made this work, either way.

I do it. I converted to Postgres and wish I hadn't because it makes it more complicated. It really helps if one computer is the more dominant computer for your play. In that case, simply back up Postgres on your regular computer, copy the file to the other computer and restore it. Use a USB jump drive for this. On the other computer copy HH files to the jump drive, or email them and import them on the main computer.

This has worked fine for me.

Not sure if I'm following you are not. What I hoped to do was to run PT on the portable drive on both computers, which appears complicated with Postgres.

Is that what you are doing? Or are you just using the portable drive to transport the backup file to the second computer? Then I suppose you just have to make sure that you are emailing the correct files each time to the main computer.

The later, and it is not hard to "cut" the HH files when you transfer them. I have had no problem doing this at all.

Buy a 3rd computer that is rather ghetto for cheap, and install a Linux Distro on it, then run Postgres on the Linux box, and both PCs can access the database.

I just export the HHs for the day and email them to myself. I then import them on the other computer.

Edit: I zip them first.

Ok, I just started trying to the backup/restore method on a second computer. This is actually the first time I've ever used the restore function. It seems to take a while, unless I'm doing it wrong.

Is it supposed to take more than a few minutes? Is there any other quicker way of keeping both computers' databases up to date, aside from (1) doing a backup/restore on the second computer each time; and (2) exporting the hands played on the second computer, into the first computer?
