Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but your handicap does not adjust downwards as fast as your improvement.

Phil may have been playting to a 20 handicap, didn't play for 3 months but instead took lessons everyday.

When he plays again his handicap is still 20. Even though he may now have the skill of a 10 handicapper, his handicap does not adjust because he took lessons. It only adjusts based on the scores you shoot.

Handicaps are calculated using your best 10 out of your last 20 scores. Shooting one good score or one bad score does not usually change your handicap very much.

Phil's handicap, by the numbers, was probably correct at the time of the match.

Wow, how can everything you posted in this quote be so wrong?

[/ QUOTE ]

Wow, care to elaborate?

Does your USGA handicap adjust because you took lessons? No.

It adjusts based on the scores you shoot.

If Ivey had a 20 handicap, took lessons for 3 months but didn't play, hence did not card a score in those 3 months, his USGA handicap is still legitimately 20.

Would I gamble with him at a 20 knowing that all he did was take lessons for the last 3 months. Of course not. That would be stupid. Ask Ram.

Yea your USGA handicap does not adjust but how many responses containing some form of "this is golf hustling anything goes you can use a bazooka to shoot your ball" do you need to realize that this is not [censored] the USG mother flipping A.

This whole thing comes down to friendship.

When setting up a match against someone who I considered a friend, I would expect them to be reasonably honest about their handicap. If they lied about their golf game and cleaned me out, I would tell them to [censored] off, and maybe worse.

If I got cleaned out by someone who I did NOT consider to be a friend, I would say I got beaten fair and square because I agreed to the terms and should have known better. I would pay up and never give this guy action again and let people know what happened.

Looks like Phil has no problem screwing over people who consider him a friend.

Diddle: As has been said, likely Ram might have considered Ivey more of a friend than Ivey considered Ram.

[ QUOTE ]
sorry, i just want to know why it should be ok to lie during negotiations to gain an edge?

[/ QUOTE ]

Uhmm...because Ivey is a gambler who likes setting up +EV situations? Would this be that big of an issue if Ram had did what Ivey did? I wonder how much Ivey's "image" is coming into play here with some people. Ivey is a professional gambler...he's not a saint. If he was he likely wouldn't be nearly as good in his profession.

Many people in this thread arer taking the wrong view that one person is inherently bad and the other good. Either Ivey is a scumbag and Ram is a saint or vice versa. The truth is both gamblers, like most individuals are not black and white, but have gray areas. When it comes down to it I believe it would be best to have a team of unbiased arbitrator's decide what is just. However both players will have to live with the results, not just monetary, but reputation and future ability to do some "friendly" gambling.

During negotiations...

Ivey: I haven't played in the last three months

Ram: Sure i'll pay you if i lose

So, the first lie by Ivey is ok b/c he is just getting an edge over Ram... but Ram lying to get a freeroll is not ok?
Seems to me like Ram got the best of this bet if you look at it that way. Thats only true if lying is an acceptable part of negotiations as has been stated throughout this thread.

[/ QUOTE ]

Lying is acceptable, not paying is unacceptable. Go back to equivocation school.
