You know what is more funny than a young kid not thinking a dollar is a lot of money? It's a old man who has tons of life experience thinkin that a dollar is.

You really have no clue, do you?

I think the real thing is I'm not there to play 3/6 for serious money, I am playing it because it is the only game offered. If it were up to me obviously play higher stakes where the same sized tips would be in effect.
SEMI CHANGE OF SUBJECT: In Negreanu's blog a while back he talks about tipping in the high stakes games they play. Those guys tip 5 dollars a hand usualy (obvoiusly sometimes more) but he never said more than 100. This is in a 4/8k limit or 600/1200 NL game. Now personaly i think that is just down right stingy.

$5 a hand, 25 hands an hour (conservative)=$125 an hour.

$125 an hour x 8 hours=$1,000 a day

$1,000 a day x 5 days a week=$5,000 a week

$5,000 a week x 50 weeks a year (2 weeks vacation)= $250,000 a year to be a poker dealer.

Cheap bastards.

If you were winning pots for 5 and 6 figure sums, you would tip five dollars? i would tip 100 minimum anytime i won a pot. Im sure I will get called an idiot for this, but if i was that fortunate financialy, i would be very generous with my money. and on top of it its the classy thing to do in my opinion. I dont see how you can argue it not being classy.

See my post above.

The dealers are doing just fine with $5 a hand. That's HUGE money.

Yeah but your numbers are a little off. What you are saying would imply that one dealer deals the "big game" 8 hours a day, five days a week for 50 weeks a year. that just obviously does not happen. and secondly, i could care less if the dealer was a millionaire, if had a lot of money id tip very very well and i guess that people dealing to me and serving me would just be taking advantage of the tipping sucker that i am.

I'll have to agree with Brokeski on tipping in small stakes games. I usually tip at least $1 on a very small pot & several for a big pot. There are entirely too many cheapskates in cardrooms nowadays. It really pisses me off when some jackhole wins a $500 pot (NL game) from a river bluff & then tips $1...might as well keep it...cheap bastard!!!

FWIW, I too have had dealers "take it easy on me" when we're playing on their nite off. Flop the nutz & check it down with me...just for tipping good.

$1=$50,000 a year.

Add that to the base, and again, the dealer's doing fine.

do you play at a more localized casino, where there are a lot of regulars and everyone is kinda localized? i think that makes a difference because i know the dealers at the casino i play at have to support their families and they are really great people. they get paid less than min wage because 1st, its on a reservation so those laws do not apply, and secondly the casino exspects them to get tipped a certain amount and estimates that with their salery. on top of all of that i just like it when the dealer is happy, they work faster, more on tast etc because they know that if they are working well they will get tipped better by me at least.

I've gotten to know several of the dealer pretty well because I've been playing around there for several years. And I do live fairly close by...so I guess you could say it is a local affair.

I play at a casino where tips are pooled and some of the dealers are horrendous. With that being said I very rarely tip more than $1 per win, and I don't think that would change if they kept their own tokes. If they get out 18-20 hands per down they can expect 30-40 per hour, imho that is more than adequate compensation.
