This is not up for discussion. Hendrix may be the better performer. But at a talent standpoint. Page is the best guitar player ever. Just watch the Led Zep DVD { the one with the desert on the cover}

[/ QUOTE ]

I just might have to do that. Although I'll still cringe if he does the violin stick routine.

Jimmy Page had a period of greatness, like a lot of artists. Led Zeppelin recorded some of my favorite all-time albums, but what did he do after that. Not exactly greatest of all-time material. He 'was' awesome but now he's kind of a has been in a way. I'd rank someone like Keith Richards higher than Page.

LOL Funniest thing ive read all day.

Could you point me in a direction as to some post-Zep stuff
that solidifies your claim he's the greatest of all-time. Maybe there's some stuff I've missed. The way I see it, after Zeppelin he did pretty much nothing of note. Like I said, not exactly good for the resume as far as the greatest of all-time. But still a kick ass player in his day.

Let me kick some knowledge to you man. It doesn't got [censored] to do with what you've done or where you've been. It's about how you play. If you played the guitar you would know that. You can learn to play Hendrix in half the time to learn Page. It's the skill Page possesses that makes him the BEST GUITARIST EVER.

You got to be kidding. Hendrix isn't even the best Jim. Jimmy page baby.

[/ QUOTE ]

Jimmy Page disagrees with you. As does almost every legendary guitar player.

[/ QUOTE ]

It's a matter of opinion. And I didn't know you knew Jimmy Page. Could you ask him who his favorite power ranger is while you're at it.

[/ QUOTE ]

Jimmy Page was great, nobody will argue that. But when you look at the total package(song writing, vocal power, and guitars, not to mention soul) its hard for me to see Page in the same light as Jimi Hendrix. Can u dig what I am saying?

[/ QUOTE ]

I can definitely dig that. As a complete package it would be hard for me to argue that Page is better than Hendrix. But as a guitarist, Hendrix can't even touch Page. Watch the Led Zeppelin DVD set that came out a few years ago.

[/ QUOTE ]

after that, watch Hendrix at Woodstock DVD during the improvisation after Purple Haze all the way to the end of Villanova Junction. ay caramba

I've played guitar for nearly 20 yrs. I think Page lost it after Zeppelin and he's yet to find it. I don't see him displaying this skill anywhere anymore. And what's more I think he knows it and that's why.

What's that got to do with who plays the guitar better. I don't see Hendrix playing anymore either, for obvious reasons. You've seen and heard Page. Does he have a contract with you that states he must renew his badass guitar skills every so often to remain good. Do me a favor. Smoke a doobie, listen to a Hendrix guitar solo, than a Page solo. Page clearly has {Had to you} better skills. I am not taking anything away from Jimi Hendrix, he is an insane guitar player. But just a little less qualified than Page for the top spot.

If I was without a doubt the best guitar player of all-time you can be damn sure I'd be out there slinging my axe every night letting people know what's what, not sitting on the sidelines.

I thought Jimi's set at Monterey was one of the most amazing live performances evah!

[/ QUOTE ]

I just listened to this in the car today, and it is still the best performance I've ever heard. But it really isn't guitar virtuosity that made this legendary. The whole atmosphere of the show (hadn't played in the US for years, had to go to England to be heard) brings a great raw energy to the set. I was a little surprised (hadn't heard the whole show in at least 10 years) at how the guitar work/soloing didn't stand out while I was completely blown away by the show.

I'll second the Jerry Garcia nomination. His music spans genres but he is still easily recognizable. I love Clapton, but you would be hard pressed to recognize that he was playing, rather than Page, SRV, Allman, Trucks or Hendrix on a blues standard. Maybe that doesn't make Garcia the greatest, but it needs to be pointed out.

Determining which player is better by which one is more difficult to mimic is really awful. And I speak as a guitar player whose personal favorite is Jimmy Page. Do you think you're qualified to tell others here who is better because you can play the opening riff to Purple Haze?

Dave Van Ronk didn't play rock, so no one seems to care, but he's probably the greatest guitarist in my mind. listen to his ragtime conversions (the entertainer, maple leaf rag) and imagine playing the guitar like a piano.

I dunno, i'm not particularly good at the guitar, so maybe i overrate him, but i think he's just overlooked b/c he played mostly folk.

ive seen derek trucks live 2-3 times this past year - once solo, once with the allman brothers, he absolutely is up there with the top guitarists of all time, hes one of those guys that you can watch / listen to play and its hard to even comprehend how is making those sounds come out of his guitar --- even for a guitarist.
when watching the video, dont forget to notice warren haynes ---- hes is [censored] sick too

also, i saw derek trucks with clapton recently, and derek trucks stole the show, i was not impressed by claptons play at all

as far as the jimi discussion goes, it really depends on what you mean by "best guitarist" , he changed music completely, he was the first to do anything even close to what he did, and most of the "best guitarists" have said that he is far and away the best of all of them.

from a technical standpoint someone like joe satriani, steve vai, yngwie malmstein or other shredders are better than he is, but IMO shredding sucks because there is no soul in it.

Hendrix FTW
