I have a problem talking about living of poker with normal people too.
I'm no high stakes player but grinding it out at the lower levels. If I mention that I live of poker people immediately think I make cash like Erik Sagström, Bengt Sonnert, Fuat Can and the other famous professionals my age from my city Linköping |

Say you are trying to break into the comedy or writing, but that you have some entrepreneurial activities that pay the day to day bills while you persue what you love. If they ask what, tell them it is boring stuff and that you don't like thinking about it more than you have to make ends meat, much less boring people with the details. You can say it's very lucrative, but that you just hate the grind and hope to break into a nice creative gig soon. If they really persist, say something like "OK. First I need to explain decision making under uncertainty to you..." and start plugging through EV, Baysean statistics, prob/stats, risk evaluation and mitigation, etc. until they agree it is boring stuff or until you get through all that and they seem to understand, then you can say "and what I apply that to is on line poker, at which I earn about $X/hour over the past 3,000 hours of play, but that number is a rough estimate based on history due to the volatility and variance of the game."

Why are people advocating making up Bs about another profession that doesnt require a formal education such as daytrading. If I understand the original post its not that your ashamed of playing poker you just dont want people to think your a bum or an arrogant ahole.
You think people will look down on you less if you tell them some made up occupation for them to find out after your a poker pro Just tell them you have quit college because it wasnt for you and your earning a healthy and sustainable income playing poker. If they ask how much you make tell them thats its enough for you to enjoy yourself without worrying about money |

apathy,
it is important, imo, to come up with a job that no one will ask a follow up on unless you are willing to be continually witty. |

[ QUOTE ]
See, I don't own a watch or a car. I've never bought anything over $5k. [/ QUOTE ] I can't tell if you're serious or joking. If you're serious, then I'd worry about the miser issues before I worried about what I told people I did for a living. Besides, driving a Ferrari tends to speak loudly without your having to say a thing. Two problems solved at once. |
