Tomoe sushi in NYC...kicks Nobu's butt at half the price...its a hole in the wall tho, if you care about decor, go to Nobu or any of the other expensive places...

[/ QUOTE ]

Tomoe is nice, but sushi Yasuda is the best. Nobu does not get their 'butt kicked' by anyone.

Yama is likely the best for value, still.

Most of my Toronto suggestions are well known places, but two really good fast food places are
The Burger Shack Eglinton in between Yonge and Avenue and Belly Busters Submarines just south of Yonge and York Mills.

[/ QUOTE ]

Completely on board with Sushi on Bloor. Best (and most reasonable) sushi in the city, imo. And the Shack and Belly's are probably two of my favourite eateries anywhere. Used to have my picture up at Belly's Wall of Fame - but I haven't been there in over a year so who knows.

What about Pizza Papalis in Greektown or Dearborn? IMO better than pretty much any deep dish in Chicago. (First time I had it was after living in Chicago for several years, so this isn't a childhood remembrance or something).

All,

FYI, I just started an SF suggestions thread. Gonna do a bunch of those and then everyone can copy their suggestions from here into the appropriate city-specific thread.

I like yama a lot, but ushiwakamura is imo much better and around the same cost. it was in time out recently as an alternative to the soho yama actually.

St. Louis:

Garduno's on Cherokee Street has great Mexican. Actually, there are several good Mexican places on Cherokee, but not all of them serve alcohol. Garduno's does.

Les Halles is unknown? Gee, the executive chef there only has his own TV show and a couple of best sellers.

[/ QUOTE ]
To be fair, I prefaced my post by saying that it's probably not unknown like a lot of toher places that will be mentioned, but on the scale of NY restaurants I thin it's at least under-known. The chef having books doesn't really mean much to the average person who couldn't name the chef at any of the restaurants they like. I don't read cooking books so that does very little to make me more aware of the place. Also, it's very unlikely that someone visiting NY from out of town would know about Les Halles without specifically looking for that chef's restaurant. It's a pretty valuable thing to know, especially considering that the downtown location is one of the few really good places to eat in the financial district that's open late.

Minneapolis,

"Al's Breakfast"

Its a hole in the wall breakfast joint that is located in Dinkytown, by the University of Minnesota campus. only open in the morning until about 1pm.

[/ QUOTE ]

Good one. Used to live near Dinkytown and ate there often. I have friends that went there once with me close to 15 years ago. I was together with them last month and the "Israeli omelette" came up in the conversation.

[/ QUOTE ]

I used to have a personal tradition of going here in the morning every time I pulled an all-nighter in college. That started to become a semi-regular occurrence my Junior year as I continued to put off progressively harder programming assignments.

Evan,

Just FYI in case you want to stop, you are pretty much totally wrong and MrMon is totally right about Les Halles being known.

However, it IS good to know that it's one of the few places in the financial district to get good food late.
