belle and sebastian is one of my fave bands. other awesome british indie = everything from sarah records basically - field mice, another sunny day, orchids, blueboy etc.
orange juice, the original indie pop band basic, some great tracks are falling and laughing, blueboy, wan light, intuition told me so, etc.
fosca - awesome indiepopdisco with sick witty/beautiful/funny/sad lyrics. best songs = supine on the astroturf, storytelling johnny, secret crush on third trombone, some other stuff
black tambourine - kinda proto shoegaze, lots of distortion and feedback, really really good
stockholm monsters - very underrated manchester band, kinda got pushed aside by new order etc but theyre great. very dark and postpunkish. check out party line, national pastime, your uniform and every other song basically.

also, My Favorite from new york is a great band thats currently active. check out working class jacket, homeless club kids, lets stay alive, love at absolute zero etc
the aislers set, completely sick band from san fransisco, [censored] sick eclectic sounding production, sounds like beach boys mixed with joy division mixed with phil spector mixed with the smiths, completely awesome melodies and stuff too. might take a while to digest properly tho, i dunno. my fave songs = saras song, the way to market station, been hiding, long division, mission bells, the walk...

uh theres more obviously but i probably shouldnt make it longer.

Claunchy,

I have seen The Paper Chase at the Granada. I think seeing them live made me like their music more. This was back when they would do three day sets in Dallas, too bad they don't do this anymore.

I used to see them at Rubber Gloves in Denton all the time back in college. They definitely put on a great show.

CMI,

I figured the gold standards were in no need to be mentioned.

I got one that I have been listening to all day, not really indie actually...just a supergroup

Damon Albarn-Blur, Gorillaz
Paul Simonon-The Clash
Simon Tong-The Verve
Tony Allen-Afrobeat co-founder
Danger Mouse

The Good, The Bad & The Queen

The reviews have been mixed but I have a sweet spot for dark and moody music.

The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower
The Dilinger Escape Plan

these are both rock/punk/hardcore bands that incorporate jazz/fusion elements .....real sick stuff, its such a shame that plot stopped putting stuff out. not to mention i heard their live shows were crazy

as for the more standard indie scene stuff, the following bands all have new albums either already out or coming out very soon that are pretty sick (ive listened to / have all of them)

The Arcade Fire - Neon Bible (great album, not as groundbreaking or spectacular as Funeral, but a solid album nonetheless)

Bloc Party - A Weekend In The City (meh, definitely doesnt have enough good solid songs, definitely in a different direction than Silent Alarm)

Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna Are You The Destroyer (sick album, a little more experimental than previous albums, but still has such a catchy feel to all the songs. theres so much stuff in their heads its crazy)

The Shins - Wincing The Night Away (solid album, nothing crazy or groundbreaking again)

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Some Loud Thunder (more experimental, definitely a diff direction, but that comes w/the freedom of not having a label breathing on their backs)

Nath mentioned them in one of his mixes but I really recommend checking out Kings of Convenience. They are like a modern Simon and Garfunkle. Start with I'd Rather Dance With You and Surprise Ice for songs and work from there. I'd actually recommend almost anything under the Astralwerks label.

yves - you might like Boards of Canada. worth a shot, anyway-- start with Music Has the Right to Children and go from there.

listen to "Love Songs on the Radio"

(older stuff = more shoegaze for all of them, I think they all went pop in later years, a lot of the stuff on Hype Machine is newer so you don't get an accurate sample)
