Once upon a time, someone I know very well in NY mailed a man living in New Jersey a letter saying that they've won two tickets to The Producers on Broadway. The tickets were attached. The person went to The Producers and all was well until, coming out of the show, he got served with a lawsuit.
The differences between that guy and your brother: 1)the lawsuit eventually got thrown out for fraudulent service (oops), whereas your brother is still broke 2)to my knowledge, the NJ guy was never prosecuted for murder |

you dont give a gift like this to someone who is in financial trouble.
you just dont do it, it's an [censored] thing to do. if you give it to someone who has money, haha, but still sort of lame. i think giving it to a complete stranger would be funnier, or maybe a high stakes poker player. i would hate that feeling, like, 'oh man, what a break, i can pay off my car and we can do that trip now, this is so amazing' and then it's gone? [censored] that. i would yell at him probably. |

ep,
"There was no bottle of wine or whatnot to accompany the gag gift." I just assumed based on what you wrote (that people if the gift was under $20 or whatever would toss in a lotto ticket) that this was in addition to the real $10 bottle of wine or something. Having just the fake lotto ticket is indeed super-weak. |

Bad timing, unlucky theft of a gift.
Apologize and go on. If they won't let it go, tell them you understand they're having tough times, but it's time to move on. |

15 mins is ridiculous, 3 mins is about right, once they start talking about loans need to end joke ASAP. Should never give one of these to people with any money issues.
I cracked up, however. |

If anyone pulled this on me or anyone close to me I'd beat the living [censored] out of them.

I think people are overreacting. Had the person included another gift (the "bottle of wine" type item), then I would not have been angry at all -- a fun little prank with no specific target.
What I'd be angry about is not the fact that the people's elation was smashed, but the fact all he gave was a useless piece fo paper. Not really in the spirit of christmas. |
