because he's not a minority or a legacy
he has C+ grades
he took a year off
he would have probably have to buy them a new library to get into an ivy league

and it's not that I doubt Jeff's intelligence, it's just hard to be a white male and please ivy league admissions officers

LOL @ people who think he's gonna get into Ivy's.

really? why?

Um...because getting into Ivy League schools is hard.
I had a 3.9 GPA and 1590 SAT, and didn't get into everywhere I applied.

Unless he is a legacy or BS minority, he won't. I had a 1600 on SAT (the old one out of 1600), and a 4.0 GPA with 9 AP classes (5/5 on 8 of the AP tests). Captain of the varsity baseball team. I didn't get into any of the IVY's.

Compare that with the OP.

LOL. You were shafted, or you wrote a pretty crappy essay. People with worse stats get into Ivies frequently, as per my old high school last year, my friend had a 2200 and a 3.9 GPA and got into Penn, taking pretty damn hard courses, but your stats were probably better.

Unless OP mentions cardrunners though, his chances for ivies are slim. His chances of getting into a school one tier lower than that are pretty damn good though.

Did you apply to all of them? People with stats like that get rejected at Harvard/Yale/Princeton all the time, but I would think you would be a shoe-in for Dartmouth or Cornell.

Hey Jeff,
I'm a senior at Yale, and fwiw, I had an extensive and pretty open talk with my dean about my poker playing, and he was EXTREMELY disapproving of it. He said that whether or not I'm making money, playing poker is not something a college student should spend his time doing. Hope that gives you a glimpse of how people in academia probably view it.

I wrote my essay on playing poker, and what it had taught me. I got rejectoed from Notre Dame, but got in and go to Boston College. My grades were mediocre (90 average at a decent Jesuit school), and my sats bad (1350).

You say the most selective MA school you are applying to is NE, but you have a decent chance at getting into BC if you wanted to.

Take that for what it is worth.

emonrand87,

there is no way. not even Cornell??

you are either BSing about your credentials, i dont' really know why you would do this though, or you must have made a HUGE mistake in your apps.

of the top of my head I know people with 3.3-3.5 GPA, 1200's SAT scores, NO sports and choir-type activities that went to Cornell, Brown etc.
neither was a minority.

For those wondering:

I'm not BSing. I didn't apply to all of them - Brown is too hippy for me, Dartmouth and Cornell too much in the middle of nowhere. I applied to the rest tho.

I'm from the west coast. I really, really doubt I messed up my essays that badly. I spent a ton of time on them, and I always do extremely well on my writing classes (in high school AND in college).

FWIW, I'm extremely happy at Northwestern, and I LOVE Chicago. And NU is a great school anyway.
