[ QUOTE ]
You say that as if they would not have their rights protected. I assure you it will still be a capitalist democracy here, respectful of individual rights if you speak french. [/ QUOTE ] |

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I of course am in total disagrement of what they did, as I condemn violence to attain political goals. But you know of course that the majority of those bombs were the actions of RCMP agents, this is well documented. [/ QUOTE ]Link to credible news source [/ QUOTE ] There is a lot of information about that, but it is hard to find in english, mysteriously. See this link in french if you want : RCMP actions in Quebec in the 1970s [/ QUOTE ] FFS...the article says *nothing* about the RCMP blowing up bombs. There is mention of how they torched a meeting place between the FLQ and Black Panthers, and a mention of how a rogue office stole some dynamite, but no mention of them setting off "hundreds" of bombs. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Also, Québec hasn't signed the 1982 constitution. [/ QUOTE ] And for the last 25 years, they pull that out as an excuse to do whatever the [censored] they want, the law be damned. [/ QUOTE ] It should be noted, at least so far as I know, that no federal state in the world (and there are a lot of them), requires unanimity among the sub-national units (provinces, states, ...) to pass law, even constitutional law. So the 'we didn't sign it, we aren't bound to it' argument doesn't fly. [/ QUOTE ]I know we're bound to it and not arguing otherwise. |

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] OP - you do realize that many large corporations relocate to Quebec to realize tax benefits and to take advantage of low rent (esp. Pharma companies)? This will likely change upon separation. What are your advantages in energy and resources? Please cite specific examples. [ QUOTE ] but I think there are enough reasonable folks to accomplish this smoothly. [/ QUOTE ] You're kidding of course. Right?? [/ QUOTE ]Why would we cease to allow advantages to certain companies if it favors Québec economy? It won't change. Well, Québec has still a lot of rivers untapped for hydro-electric power, along with a lot of underground ressources (iron, gold, copper, etc), has a lot of aluminum plants due to the power available cheap to these companies. This would not cease. [/ QUOTE ] Because there wil be no benefits to the company itself. This is where your argument fails. You are only thinking about the benefits to yourself. These tax benefits are being realized in CANADA, not the country of Quebec. Given that you will now owe billions in taxes and be unable to support current social programs - the new country of Quebec will not be able to continue to offer such benefits. It's simple economics. Also, the foreign companies that set up shop in Quebec do so to gain cheap access to the entire Canadian market. I am specifically referring to the big Pharma companies. Staying in Laval and places like that would give them access to the Quebec market and nothing more. Do you see what I am saying here? Your untapped resources lie mostly in Native lands. Do you plan on displacing them for easy access to these reserves? While at the same time violating global environmental regulations? |

quebec is good and its the only place in canada i'd live right now. WHY? joie de vivre skiing in the winter strip clubs/nightlife drawback: taxes but im still moving to cali, stricly for the weather. [/ QUOTE ] Ontario may not have "joie de vivre" (whatever that means), but we have skiing in the winter, can receive lap-dances from strippers, and our taxes are lower than in Quebec. |

Joie de vivre: Carefree enjoyment of life.
The irony is overwhelming. But you really can't argue with the quality of strippers in Montreal... |

Is Georges St. Pierre a national hero for you guys now? Do you think that the UFC dropping David Loiseau is evidence of anti-french sentiment?

[ QUOTE ]
I wish quebec would separate and somehow leave us with Montreal. And that Bonhomme snowman [/ QUOTE ] If Quebec wished to separate and *only* took the areas where the majority voted to separate, I'd have no problem with it. They'd lose Western Quebec, Montreal, and Northern Quebec. They separatists would be left with some of the poorest areas of Canada. Enjoy! |

OP,
How do you compare the current situation in Quebec, as far as autonomy, to the situation with the Catalans, Basques, and to a lesser extent the Gallegos in Spain? How similar is it in your opinion to native peoples in Canada and the US? |
