8) What does Quebec do while waiting to negotiate entry into NAFTA, GATT, etc (could easily take years)? What happens to Quebec's economy if Canada acts to block Quebec's inclusion in these treaties?

[ QUOTE ]
OP, Quebec received exactly half of the $11.2. B in equalization payments to the provinces last year. This equates to about $750 per man/woman/child or about $50K over one's life. Is this "cultural affirmation" really worth $50 K? Are you really prepared to give up this gravy train to protect a cultural identity which frankly has never been threatened? [/ QUOTE ]I think with the money available from Quebec taxpayers there is more than enough to manage it as a country. I don't deny there would be a need for a cleanup in expenses. Heck there is now. |

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] Was Quebec itself ever a distinct country? I don't mean a French colony, but its own country. [/ QUOTE ]No, but should we choose to become one, we'll be like latino-american countries, for example. They were not one before, too. [/ QUOTE ] Right. Enjoy hyperinflation and unemployment rates higher than any country in the Western world. Especially if you plan on going the dollarization route. Not only will you lose the above-mentioned payments to your province/country/Petoria, but you will also have no part in being a lender of last resort. That is, you will not be able to issue new currency when your social services are unable to keep up with a lack of funding. And in addition to the money you will owe your previous country as part of the national debt, you will further incur a current account deficit. Lastly, what makes you think Quebecers will be so willing to separate yet continue to use the Canadian dollar as a national currency. This conflicts with your notion of Quebec nationalism and independence. |

Why would the U.S., Canada, or Mexico want them to be a part of NAFTA? What could Quebec offer those countries?
