I think having 2 jobs for sixs months or less reflects much worse for you on your resume than anything you could say about poker. How is a new job supposed to trust that you are not just going to get tired of them after a few months and quit again if the potential to make a living playing poker is always there?

Do not mention poker. 1% chance they think its cool, 99% chance they think its degenerate. Do not do it!

Another option would be to go back to school. Get another degree and you're a fresh-faced new grad all over again.

White lies are OK, but make sure its got some semblance of truth, because outright lies will bite you in the end. Don't be afraid to bounce around a little before you settle in on a position, job, and organization that you like and pays well. Try some different things out.

This is the abridged version. I'd be happy to expound if you want.

Thanks all for the responses. I agree that mentioning anything about poker on my resume is a bad idea. Not sure what route I'm going to take but the responses have given me some hope. Now to monster and career builder (Yikes! I hate those places).

Tell him you took a year off to write the great American novel. Then when he asks what its about, tell him the plot to the grapes of wrath or the great gatsby.

Inform him you are in talks with a publisher for an early 2008 release, and then never speak of it again. Voila!

LIE. Absolutely.

Make up some job bs with your family business. Fake references.

LIE.

Truth is for suckers.

There have been a lot of responses saying "DO NOT MENTION POKER." Do any of the people who said that work in finance? My guess is no, but I am curious.

FWIW, I used to own a consulting company that dealt exclusively with finance companies, and I have an extraordinarily hard time imagining anybody in the industry who would look down on that profession.

That said, if you are going for corporate finance, then yeah... stfu about it. Those people are morons.
