wow this thread is sick

$$$ = happiness apparently

noone else here thinks giving up the personal freedom you gain from playing poker professionally is insane?

also, to go from being a huge winner at poker to ANOTHER $$$ focused career, with alot less flexibility and autonomy...GROSS

if youre interested in the markets in an intellectual and game/challenge manner, fair enough

go create some positive change in the world if youre such a freaking genius

I, for one, certainly cherish that freedom.

I'm currently considering working some standard finance job for the necessary 2-3 years 40 hours a week until I can get into business school and then becoming a professor. They have joke hours can potentially touch 200kish.

Dude, the only difference between this and the first half of your post is ambition. That isn't to say that one is preferable to the other. Just that the essence of your plan is to burn a couple of years for a cozy life after.

There are a LOT of things that are more interesting/fulfilling than his choice of a challenge, though.

I agree. But Strassa mentioned last time about "managing a hedge fund". I think he probably has some pretty big goals ahead of himself.

Going from poker to this with money not being primary motivator reminds me of a joke:

John Crapface decides it is time to change his name, and he talks to the name changing agency. They tell him they are unable to do it for whatever reason, and that he has to go to a higher office. John Crapface treks around from office to office, each telling him the same thing. This goes on for a long time. He finally gets an audience with the president himself, after a decade of wandering about trying to get his name changed. The president is able to change his name to whatever he wants, and John Crapface happily states: "I want to change it to Jim Crapface"

Yeah, I agree that long term potential is a pretty big motivator here. Telling yourself its going to be a fun/intricate/interesting/etc journey getting there may be a good attitude to have, but don't be surprised when it isn't anything like that, and instead its a disgusting life-consuming grind.
