While I would feel safer with a different government in power, I see no indications to worry about Canada following the US on this issue. AFAIK, in the US, certain rogue senators and congressmen had been pursuing such legislation for nearly 10 years. I have heard nothing of the sort here.
As we have seen down there though, it only takes one zealot to push a bill like this through. Can anyone here with a good understanding of Canadian politics provide some insight on the norms here vis a vis piggybacking small unpopular bills onto much bigger popular ones? |

Also, mods, could this thread be moved to the legislation forum? As its very political in nature and will probably get better responses.

[ QUOTE ]
We gotta keep voting Liberals man. For those of you who thinks this can't happen in Canada, think again. All it takes is for a few religious douchebags to get majority and start forcing 'morality' down our throats. The US would most likely get this law challenged at some point. If the same thing happened in Canada, I don't think we would have a big enough voice (enough people to care) to do anything. If it does happen it would be catastophic for me [/ QUOTE ] Ignorant statement IMO. You want to vote in another Liberal government that steals millions of taxpayer dollars to fund it's own party, and then spends millions more on various advertising campaigns trying to brainwash you into agreeing with them on every stance. The Conservative government is what it's name says it is in Canada (Conservative). It's more conservative in its spending and taxing then the liberals. It is not geared toward forcing morality down your throat anymore than the Liberal party is geared toward forcing you to attend a gay rights parade. IMO the Liberals would be more likely to start taxing and regulating online gambling then the Conservatives (which is what we should be worrying about) because they love to rob you through new taxes. An outright ban or ban of transactions or whatever would just not happen up here IMO. There is just no support for it. |

I'd feel much more confident with the liberals in power than your PC government the way it is today. I assume by your stealing millions comment that you're refering to the sponsership scandal. Frivilous spending by the liberals perhaps, but outright stealing? now that's an ignorant statement IMO. Despite all the shortcomings of the Liberal party, we've had balanced budgets and greater liberties like gay marriages, legalization of pot, etc. When Harper got elected, one of his first priorities was to revisit the gay marriage bill within his first week! WTF does that have to do with anything? I'd feel much more secure with online poker and status quo with someone from the liberal party running our country than a right winged Bush wannabe like Harper. This will be the end of the thread hijack, I just had to get the last word in because arguing about politics and religion on the internet are for idiots. Thank you. End hijack. |

Washington state had online poker made illegal by liberals. What you need to avoid is the government thinking "We know what's best for you" thinking, whuch can and has been done by both sides. [/ QUOTE ] Truth. |

NOPE!
1)Stephen Harper is a wet blanket; 2)We don't have a large Christian-Right Coalition pulling the strings, this type of bill would be met with greater resistance, 3)This type of bill is against WTO regulations. Canada actually cares about international law. That being said, lets be sure we never let anything like this get close! |
