You know those chess pieces are called Staunton for a reason. Botvinnik played it quite a bit. Bobby Fisched played 1. e4 99% of the games he played. I imagine Boris Spassky was quite surprised to see it in 1972 in Iceland. I am way better at chess history than I am at actual chess.

In regards to whites first move, 1.c4 will/could turn into an opening where white had played 1.d4
Thats what all the 1...e6 talk was about. Had white played one of his rook pawns first, black would still have its hands full.
