Default Q5s, cap the flop?

Opponent is 42/20 with 35 ASB over 250 hands.

Most of the time I'm just calling down after the flop 3bet and probably fold the river if I don't improve. But I noticed a lot of people will also 3bet with overcards at this limit (I mostly play 10/20 where I feel that happens a lot less).

flop looks good... you almost certainly have an equity edge on this flop. the only problem is that it makes the turn tough to play when you miss... i think i'd play all streets the same, though

u would rather villain have the lead on the big bet streets so u cant get raised when u miss and u get to raise when u do hit. i think those factors are much more important than maximizing value from the occasional spewing 4 outer

I agree here, however if you are to cap there is little value in betting the turn into him.

Ya, I cap and check. I'm not sure if it's good though.

I imagine this is to try and get to the river cheaper? But when he checks behind the turn, doesn't that mean you're usually ahead anyway? Capping and checking seems bad to me especially compared to calling the 3-bet and then raising if you improve.

Sometimes it's good like this if you get a vibe and to just keep the pressure on, making his life especially difficult if he has overcards. This is a good spot to jam at him I like it. Once you cap the flop you should bet the turn, checking will elt him play nearly perfectly.

Besided that it just feels weird to check the turn after capping the flop, doesn't it just scream I'm on a flush draw? I almost feel I would need to call down with my pair then anyway.

I agree. The cap on flop has some advantages and disadvantages

advantages
-the oponents will be less inclined to reraise you with marginal hands or for free card on future hands
-you may get to fold some better hands like 66-99
-you have bet odds on flop against Overcards, meaning that you earn more with every bet you put
-you are even money against top pair on flop

disadvantages
-you dont have position, so playing the turn will be though as you will be prone to bigger mistakes
-you give away too much information, except if you cap the flop often

I agree that you cannot check the turn, because again you give away too much information and good opponents will make
less mistakes against you. But on other side you cannot bet, because it is costly to be raised on turn.

Thats why I would be more inclined to call buttons reraise.
It give me more flexibility and more chances for my opponents to make bigger mistakes on next stages.

Comments?

Good variance

I like the flop cap against this villain, and depending on how recent blind encounters have gone and how he's been playing/running, sometimes cap without the flush draw here. I also bet non-paint turn and river cards. Since you see flop semibluff/bluff checkraises so often on these kind of flops, you will get 3-bet frequently by this type of villain when he has overcards. I've been called down many times here, after capping the flop and betting turn/river blanks, with AK or AQ.

After his turn raise however, I don't think this guy is crazy enough to do that with a hand that you beat, other than maybe A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]K[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. I'd play turn and river the same way.
