i would speculate that the reason the 2p2 officialdom hasnt said anything is because of possible legal ramifications. They are kinda sticklers for that, and they are based in nevada.

For those that understand what the law is on this, statements like that ring 100% hollow. There is no, and I repeat no, legal concern surrounding commentary on pending legislation. This is a practice fully protected for individuals (and to a large extent corproations) by the first amendment. Thousands of companies, individuals, and trade associations launch advocacy campaigns on pending legislation every year. In other words, no, there is no possible way advocacy on legislation would cause legal problems. |

NROG I am hoping you and other groups are trying to cut a deal. Something with a lot of bark and not a lot of bite. People will disagree with me but I think some kind law will be passed sooner or later. Most senators that I have heard of are either undecided or for this bill, does not seem very many are against it. And we know where the house and president stand. Cutting a deal might be the best option.

scrapperdog...we're working hard on this, I can assure you that. We have a team right now inside D.C. fighting hard. Our action plan is to take down this latest effort by Frist. Once we accomplish that we will look at his next move and react accordingly. We have a few lawmakers on our side who would agree to a study before a ban. A study would at least give us a year or two to educate and activate more troops. There is a large portion of the Senate and as we saw in July the House as well who would like to see this ban passed. We just have to play this day by day and hope we get through this week, then the lame duck session without a successful movement. Its clear inside lobbying efforts are begining to falter. That's what makes our message at NROG more important. We must finally stand up and take this issue to the people. The reason this is such an easy push for Congress is that 90% of the country has no idea it's going on. Ask your neighbor. Your relatives. Your banker. They need to know a basic right is going to be taken away. Its not about gambling online...its about standing up to government and telling them to stay out of our personal lives. We must call up the PEOPLE! There is no greater force in this country than that of our fellow citizens. Imagine 200,000 calls rather than 3,000 the next time we mobilize a march. It can and will happen once we launch this message in the media. Will it stop them? No guarantees but lets go for it.

Here's an organization that should be a natural ally on this matter (recall it is being packaged as a GOP "values" issue, and the roots of its support lay in the religious right):
http://www.defconamerica.org My emailed bleatings to them thus far don't seem to have impressed; perhaps a few hundred comments from 2+2ers about the issue might get their attention, and more important their assistance on the issue on capitol hill. And no need to stop there. Does the ACLU have a position on the government essentially monitoring every website every US citizen visits, as would be a necessary part of this legal trash? I'd bet they do. Has anyone alerted them? 2+2 needs permission from its mommy or its lawyer to have an opinion in America, but the rest of us don't. |

[/ QUOTE ] I've always tried to keep that attitude, "everything will turn out the way we want," but after reading your last post I don't feel very good. For Berge, Mr.K, or anyone who might know. What possibly is happening now over the weekend as far as negotiations, is it possible nothing/very little is happening? Thanks |

just wanna say props to you yankees for working hard at pushing your grievance.
Is there anything us Euro Smegs can do to help, or are our voices completely extraneous to the issue? |

[/ QUOTE ] I think there is a genuine role for non-Americans to play, though it may be difficult to do outside of governmental channels. There is no reason, for example, that a UK official could not tell legislators how the various legislative proposals could complicate trade relations. Whether it is good strategy for foreign governments to get involved is something I will leave for the legislative experts. But in theory, I think that non-Americans could help influence opinion. |

Thanks [/ QUOTE ] I am almost positive that staff level meetings are ongoing for the DoD Authorization bill. They are probably still clearing up loose ends and as Member level decisions are made incorporating them into the conference report language. Last I heard they still want to get this thing filed by Monday night/early Tuesday so it is being crafted still. |
