[ QUOTE ]
are you the internet police? have YOU bothered to do a seach before calling this poster a liar or are you just some kind of high school debater? [/ QUOTE ] lol. no i'm not the internet police. frankly i don't give a [censored] either way. when someone post saying they read something somewhere and they don't provide links to back it up i usually don't even finish reading their post. and i'm hardly a debater at all. i'm not very articulate and will not fair well in any debate. and i don't believe i ever called him a liar. he said [ QUOTE ] According to press reports [/ QUOTE ] and [ QUOTE ] In previous news reports [/ QUOTE ] and [ QUOTE ] The prosecutor in the Carruthers case also said [/ QUOTE ] i asked him [ QUOTE ] Did you make this up or can you provide links? [/ QUOTE ] and [ QUOTE ] i asked you for the links, you do the search. or don't post bs off the top of your head. [/ QUOTE ] if you construed me saying "don't post bs" as me calling him a liar, you are mistaken. the burden of "proof" should fall to the poster, not the reader. imo. yeah, i could google it, but i shouldn't have to. i'm supposed to just take his word that he's not making this [censored] up? I usually wouldn't respond, but it just happened to hit a nerve this time. I got two really good friends, one a staunch republican and one a die hard democrat. I kinda fall in between the two. But I get so friggin tired of hearing them spout all kinds of [censored] that they've managed to spin to benefit their side of the "truth". And even if OP provided the links, I would still be skeptical because I'm sure there are sources on both sides of the argument that will spin the story to a favorable support of their position. But at least post the links so someone who is interested can read the story for themselves and come to their own conclusions. and if you look hard enuf you may even find instances where i've violated my on position on this. It's just annoying to me to see people do this, that's all. peace |

Well Trainslayer I do think you are quetioning my integrity and I don't much like your tone, but here are a few links for you. I wrote the original at work and did not have a lot of time to sit there and footnote everything, but if you had been following the media reports about the David Carruthers arrest and the Internet Gambling Ban passed in the House you would have seen this stuff.
Here is the story from the Times UK that discussed in detail the prospect of UK execs being extradited to the U.S. to stand trial and the original thread it was posted in: UK Article Thread Here is the article featuring the prosecutor's statement and a link to a Full Tilt thread talking about on-line gaming and terrorism: Hanaway Full Tilt Also Rep. Jim Leach of Iowa and Rep. Bob Goodlatte and other Republican backers in the House have consistently tried to tie on-line gaming to organised crime, drug trafficking, money laundering and yes, terrorism. The Gaming ban also has it's Democratic backers, but they usually don't link it to crime or terrorism, but more to the need to legislation to save people from themselves or to save our children. I oppose both legislating morality or for the purpose of self-preservation and using the prospect of terrorism to drum up public support for anti-gaming legislation. Both of these tactics are being used by both parties on this issue. |

I can't believe I'm letting myself get bogged down in this discussion. This is why I usually just ignore these type of posts. Neither side will usually concede to the other so it ends up being mostly a waste of time. I do appreciate your taking the time to post the links. I can't believe it would've been that time consuming or inconvienient to link to your original post when you made the one in this thread.
I will point out why I think you should have linked to begin with. You wrote [ QUOTE ] According to press reports after David Carruthers was arrested, U.S. authorities used an anti-terror agreement with the EU that provides airline manifests that can be screened for potential terrorists to identify Mr. Carruthers as a passenger on a U.S. bound flight. [/ QUOTE ] but the article you linked above states [ QUOTE ] Concerns are also growing that an anti-terror agreement by Europe to hand passenger flight lists to the US may have been used by FBI and tax agents to swoop on David Carruthers, the BetOnSports chief executive. [/ QUOTE ] Those statements are not quite the same. You also said [ QUOTE ] The prosecutor in the Carruthers case also said that she believed the large unregulated amount of cash flowing out of the U.S. to gaming sites was being used by terrorists to plan attacks on the U.S. [/ QUOTE ] The article you link says [ QUOTE ] In an interview with the Guardian, Ms Hanaway said BetonSports' practice of taking American bets from its base in Costa Rica caused an unacceptable outflow of money from the US. "This is a very large amount of money flowing on an unregulated basis out of the US. Any time that much money's flowing outside the US, there are concerns about its destination. Under US laws, legitimate large flows of money are required to be subject to suspicious activity reports." Although the government had made no specific allegations about the destination of the $125m (£65m) of US bets taken annually by BetonSports, it was essential for the American authorities to keep tabs on such cash. "We need to check it is not being used for money laundering, drug financing or terrorism. Because it's flowing out of the country in an unregulated way, we simply don't know the ultimate destination." [/ QUOTE ] again, not quite the same. That's my two cents worth. I do not question your integrity or your convictions. I just like being able to see both sides of the story and making up my own mind. (I am not saying I disagree with you as relates to this case.) |
