a lot of the condescension is a defense mechanism. most of their customers probably treat them as subhuman as they're 'only' a waiter or a salesperson or whatever. taking a superior tone and posistion is a natural response to this.

i find if you smile at them as they approach and make an effort to treat them like an equal, most of them are pretty awesome to deal with.

failing that, just stick to nordstroms/holt. i have never, ever had a problem with an employee at either.

I get similarly annoyed when waitstaff at high-end restaurants act this way towards people to whom this is obviously a big extravagance and quite likely a special occassion.

[/ QUOTE ]

few things make me want to hurt people, and this is definitely one of them.

[/ QUOTE ]

Agreed, I have not been nearly rude enough to people who have treated me this way. I find I generally get it from older waiters. Younger people are more in tune with the idea of middle-income or working class people who save money on clothes and eat good instead.

I ran good last month and bought Ms. Thumb a nice purse that she was eyeing while we were out shopping. Probably not expensive by nice purse standards but it was a few hundred more than she would ever spend on one so she was impressed, and kept asking me in the checkout line if I was sure I wanted to get it for her. The sales girl made some remark like, "Now you know what it's like to be a baller and buy nice stuff for your girlfriend," and I just said, "Funny, I don't feel any different than before."

What I really should have said was, "If I did the same for you I could probably show you how it feels to get pumped in the cornshoot and dropped off at the bus station over a chintzy purse like the B&T trash you obviously are."

I was alone buying my g/f at the time some bag at holt renfrew and the salesperson (gay of course - gay people tend to be much more judgemental in this respect) was like "(in lisp of course) tssssss ummmm....I think that number is a little pricey for you"

[/ QUOTE ]

When did he say it to you? At the register? Or away from the register?

If away, this is a pretty common sales tactic. If at, he was just being a moron.

Sorta different, but waiters being snobby at high end restaurants reminded me.

A few years ago, my family went to a nice steakhouse for my Dad's birthday. It's named Hyde Park, and it's main thing is steaks named after something about Ohio State football. For example, one is called the Herbstreit. Anyways, everytime the waiter brought out food, he said "voila" when he put it down. I nearly burst out laughing after the first time, and by the the third or fourth time, I desperately wanted to (kindly) remind him that we were, in fact, not in France.

Yeah, stupid sales people are kind of the price to pay for lower cost stuff. I'll put up with 5 minutes of some idiot telling me how much I REALLY need to buy the extended warranty if it means I save money on my television.

I used to sell high end shoes. I can tell you the constant pushing for those care items may be due to bonuses.

As a former high end shoe salesman I would just like to say these people have a [censored] job and hate life. They are always on the brink of suicide/homicide so please, dont push them.

Maybe it's just me but I really don't see how the guy was condescending towards you. It's seems like he was just trying to be helpful. In fact the only truly condescending thing I read in your post was the following.
