Who cares if the new "ambassador of poker" is a no-talent luckbox? If memory serves correctly, that's exactly what Moneymaker was, and that didn't really have a negative effect on the game, did it?

And if the problem is that he's a prick - since when do you need to be a good person to win a poker tournament? This just in - life does not work out like in the movies, sometimes people get what they don't deserve.

I fail to see how anybody can be logically upset over this, especially since it will not affect them in any way whatsoever. You're jealous, get over it.

[/ QUOTE ]

You seem to be upset that we're upset. How, exactly, does our opinion effect you?

Of course I don't really *care*. To me, the WSOP (hell, televised poker in general) is just a soap opera with poker. It's fun to have an opinion. I like not liking the guy. Later, I might like liking the guy. As of his last hand of the tourney, he's famous like it or not. He now has the burdeon of that fame -- part of which is to take shots from people on 2+2 who know nothing about who he really is. Boo [censored] hoo.

Here's a guy that IMO plays Ok, no problem with that. He has claimed that he 'doesn't want to carry the responsibility of World Champion' essentially it's too much trouble...(but would like the money..) that's in print and on video.

I thought he was disrespectful to Allen (among others') when he knocked him out (with the worst hand).

He CONTINUES to get Chan's opinions DURING THE GAME (one player to a hand?)

I question his ettiquete, table talk goes too far IMO.

The deck has hit this guy who appears from that couldn't carry the lunch of most pros IMHO.

He acts IMO like he's God's gift. Sorry but this guy currently disgusts me and I'm sad that he apparently will represent the 'World Champion' for a game that most of us love.

What a joke. My opinion, sorry if I offend anyone, it's not intentional. Turned out to be one of the weakest final tables in recent years IMHO.

[/ QUOTE ]

I am sick and tired of this attitude and phrases like "represent the game" and 'so and so made a contribution to poker". C'mon, Stu Ungar was a drug addict and degenerate gambler he was World Champ 3 times and somehow the game managed to survive. I don't care who wins if its not me, I could care less if they are a nice classy guy like raymer or an ahole doesn't make a difference.

you mean the interview where he says "i'm great at the psychological part of the game" and "they all just played their cards, but i was playing them. i tricked them into giving me all of their money."

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm not a hater by any means, and I also thought he played the FT very well...however, I thought those comments in his interview were kind of weird.

He also made a comment about how people "got lucky" against him but he somehow still managed to prevail....come on....if he had just said "yeah, I got lucky winning all those fricken coin flips too" then maybe it wouldn't be weird, but all he said was basically "I outplayed everyone, they got lucky every once in a while but I still won." It takes a lot of courage to "play the player" when you have a 500 to 1 chip lead and you win every coin flip. Holla.

He seems like a decent guy though so maybe he didn't mean it this way.

I think people way over-value the influence of what sort of person wins the WSOP in this day and age. Sure Moneymaker was a big deal and Fossilman had an interesting nickname and novelty glasses but in general, it doesn't really make that much difference which random slightly awkward white male wins in 2006, does it?

Did Hachem really affect poker at all in the past year? I'm even from Australia and I don't think he made much/any difference. The poker boom is already a juggernaut of its own, the torch isn't going to go out no matter who's carrying it, and there are already more than enough famous poker players, etc.

Aside from this specific statement, he just has this air of general arrogance.

[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah, the part where he says "I'm great at the psychological part but I'm still learning to be a great poker player" just smacks of arrogance.

It's especially arrogant when we compare him to all the other World Champions in other competitions who are always so humble. But maybe my memory is being clouded by that Kobe Bryant interview where he said "I'm still learning to be a good ball player. I think some of the other players out there were better than me and I attibute this NBA Championship Trophy mostly to luck."

"Here's the video link in case you all missed it. Total lack of class. What a prick. "

Marlow was specifically talking about the video not Gold's conduct at the table.

[/ QUOTE ]

Right, but by "at the table" I meant all of his poker-related (as opposed to family- & friends-related) rhetoric. His condescending commentary about how bad his opponets played (even though it's true) and how he owned them and manipulated them from the beginning is also a bit classless. I thought the OP was talking about these kind of statements too.

I think he sounds like an ass in the interview. He says something to the affect that there was no way he was losing going into the FT, he knew he was going to win, unless the other players got 'extremely lucky'. Gimme a break dude.
