So we can go ahead and rename The Lounge, "The Politics Forum," right?

[/ QUOTE ]

Really! I hate this forum now!

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree.

I don't understand this. There's no obligation to open the politics threads, and I don't think it's taken away anything from discussion in other threads. Most of the politics posters didn't even post here much at all before.

db,

I don't even think some of these threads are really even Politics threads per se, moreso current events / government / economics. I thought that was the whole point of this forum, a place for discussion that was of a little more intellectual slant than the normal OOT stuff.

I would expect, even with a Politics forum, to still post threads like the Libertarian thread and Parliamentary thread in TLDR. I think of them here as more informational/educational discussion threads as opposed to threads in the Politics forum which often have more of an arguing nature to them.

Stated even more generally, I would assume that world news, current events, and the like are all excellent topics for TLDR.

What of this do you agree/disagree with?

Edited to add: No offense db, but I'm more interested in some of the more serious real-world discussion threads than in-depth discussions about Star Trek characters or list threads like Favorite Musical or various "fun" threads. I of course have no problem with them, but there's already another forum here where any entertainment or other "fun" thread gets tons of great response (and frankly, a lot of those threads would be better in OOT anyway), but the longer more serious discussion is something that imo is much better suited for this forum. I imagine that there are at least a few other folks like me who visit The Lounge primarily for the threads that are somewhat more serious in nature (note that for me this can definitely mean serious threads about topics that may themselves be somewhat light natured, if that makes any sense).

I'd state that the premise that all the threads in politics were mainly argumentive is false, however I would then be arguing your point.

I would also point out that this issue you raise is at the heart of my criticism of this forum. To say that threads that are in depth belong in TL/DR is silly--if it is politics, discuss it in politics. If it is in-depth discussion of baseball strategy, put it in sporting events, etc. This is why I believe this forum should have been arts & entertainment all along. As it is, it is rudderless and more of a side forum for threads which spill out of other forums... the dominance of political debate in the forum now attests to this fact, as does the predominance of list type threads before the politics fiasco.

J,

Let me clarify my statement re: the Politics forum threads. Because a different level of posting is allowed there (and on the rest of the forum), included among the well-reasoned responses will be some ridiculous arguments. Some of us, when involved in threads, feel compelled to respond to such ridiculous arguments. Here, the mods do not allow that type of interaction, thus there are some threads I'd post here that I just wouldn't bother with in Politics. I definitely was not implying that the Poltics forum was just a bunch of dumb arguing, just that that is a part of the forum and I don't have enough interest in it to get involved in those discussions.

How about OT or OOOT. The Lounge and The Quiet Zone are lame. How about NOT OOT or something. There should be something in the name to associate it with OOT as far as content yet something to differentiate it. The Library. The Nerd Zone I dont know...

Dom,

"guys, if this place turns into a politics forum, I'm done."

Heh, I think by now we all know what it means for you to be "done" with a forum!

JJN,

I suspect the name is here to stay, but I will always think this should have been called The Salon or some other name that really conveys the spirit of longer, intellectual discussion-oriented posting.

I really like the lounge and though I don't post much I read a lot of the threads. I sympathize with Dom because of the volume of political threads right now but I confess I was sort of enjoying the thread on libertarians this evening. It's a pretty good one. Anyway I hope the Politics Forum opens up again very soon for our political friends (and Dom) because I feel sorry for them. Just my 1 cent.

i'm a little dismayed to see multiple threads on estate taxes filled with lengthy manifesto-type posts

Sorry about that, that was my fault because I introduced the first estate tax thread a couple days ago. I'll pick a social issue next time and hope that attracts fewer AC'ers. And about the lengthy manifestos, the Mods originally told us to put some thought into our posts, and we're trying.
