I doubt any of the guys mentioned on this thread can drum as fast as Lightning Bolt or The Locust.

btw, have you heard the buddy rich tapes ? apparently he was a real fun guy to work for.
I think rich and krupa were great drummers and certainly well known and popular (race probably was a factor in their popularity), but when you put their acheivements up to someone like elvin jones, who changed the face of jazz drumming, it's not really much of a contest. --turnipmonster |

Mike Portnoy Not the greatest, but enjoyable. [/ QUOTE ] One of the times I went to see Dream Theater he had a 7 or 8 minute drum off with the session drummer for Steve Vai. Both on the same set (Portnoy's is set up like two sets). I'm generally not crazy about this sort of thing, but it was sweet to see live. |

Don't know a ton about jazz drummers, so won't comment there.
Rock : Keith Moon? or is this thread only for super drum nerds and he doesn't hold up? Also, I don't know his name, but the drummer for Dillinger Escape Plan is pretty sick. |

One of the times I went to see Dream Theater he had a 7 or 8 minute drum off with the session drummer for Steve Vai. [/ QUOTE ] If you mean Mike Mangini, that guy's incredibly fast. He actually holds (or at least held at one time) the world record for world's fastest drummer (hands category). As for Portnoy, I love his drumming. But he's always been terrible at solos. For someone who's drumming is usually original, his solos are godawful boring. |

I find most drum solos boring, anyway. I find it much more interesting when there's some little intricate parts that add to the whole of the composition. Tasteful but not over the top.
And yeah, I believe it was Mangini. Another drummer in the vein of the DEP style: Converge's drummer. The latest one. He's really good. |

Rock : Keith Moon? or is this thread only for super drum nerds and he doesn't hold up? [/ QUOTE ] Doesn't hold up. Not exactly a stickler for proper technique. Not particularly innovative. |

Ah, Neil Peart. The fan of musical masturbation's perennial #1 choice. [/ QUOTE ] Neil Peart is good, but his drum kits SCREAM "small penis syndrome." John Henry Bonham! The man did more with less! |

[/ QUOTE ] Moons drumming is freaking awesome. Nobody else ever came close to sounding like him. Totally unique, and absolutely made songs like I Can See for Miles, I Can't Explain, Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere. Who gives a crap about technique when your drummer basically destroys his kit just by playing it? |

[/ QUOTE ] Because someone like Neil Peart can do those Moon songs without destroying his kit and with good technique. Moon's a good drummer. But he's not the best ever. |
