Lebanon's parliament speaker, Hizbullah's de facto negotiator, rejected proposals brought by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Monday, insisting a cease-fire must precede any talks about resolving Hizbullah's presence in the south, an official close to the speaker said.

The IAF on Monday night fired at an Islamic Jihad warehouse in Gaza City containing large amounts of ammunition, causing a large explosion.

The IDF said that it had distributed fliers before the strike, warning residents to keep away from places where weapons were stored, as those locations would be targeted by the army. (JP)

Israel Defense Forces infantry and armored soldiers on Tuesday morning surrounded the Hezbollah stronghold in the south Lebanese town on Bint Jbail.

Military officials said Golani Brigade infantry troops had surrounded the village, imposed a closure and seized some houses on the outskirts. But the army said fighting with guerrillas was ongoing.

"There is fighting from every direction, including from the air. We are hitting terrorists, we have also taken several prisoners in this fighting. The enemy has more than a few casualties, and overall we are now stabilizing the situation to completely take over the village," Lieutenant Colonel Itzik Ronen, a deputy brigade commander of a unit operating in the area, told Army Radio.
